The weather forecasts speak of rain and strong winds during the three stages of the race, which will be held in Menorca on November 5, 6 and 7. Its 441 participants are preparing to face an experience that promises to be more epic than ever. 7th Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º starts tomorrow pending bad weather.
Maó (11/04/2021).- The moment of truth has come. A year and a half after the cancellation of the 2020 edition, the seventh Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º will begin tomorrow, Friday, November 5, in Maó, with its unique format of a stage race, on foot or by mountain bike, in teams, and for first time, individually.
Today is dedicated to assigning the numbers to the participants. Many of them repeat their participation from previous years and meet again with those who shared a challenge along the paths of this Epic event. Those who were strangers on the first day, ended up becoming family. This race is special also for the camaraderie and the coexistence that is breathed among all who are part of it.
Official presentation
The Maó Fair Grounds has hosted this morning’s official presentation of the event, which has been held with a reduced capacity to comply with health precautions and has been followed live on Instagram. In it, they have accompanied the director of the Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º, Joan Febrer: the manager of the Fundació Foment del Turisme de Menorca, Elena Costa; the councilor for sports of the Maó Town Hall, Carlos Montes, and the director of the Artiem Capri hotel, Ana Panera. Some of the most relevant athletes among those who will participate in the race have also been a part of the presentation: Ismael Ventura, Anna Comet, Ada Xinxó, Isusko Barrenetxea and Roberto Garay.
The authorities joined to thank the organization for its work, as well as to welcome the participants. As Elena Costa pointed out, the Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º “positions Menorca as an optimal island for sports and to visit 365 days a year”. Carlos Montes insisted on „the importance of sport in these times that we live in.“ Ana Panera assured that „Artiem is proud to participate in this type of event with a company like Camí de Cavalls 360º, which is an example and with which we share our values.“
Attentive to the weather
Joan Febrer gave an overview of the race, which this year had to be rethought with many new features to get going again after the circumstances that led to the cancellation at the last minute of the 2020 edition. “We are here for the seventh edition, with new challenges, a new format, a new route… and a strong north wind, but we are ready ”, assured the race director.
Among the aforementioned novelties, Joan Febrer highlighted the increase in participants to the unprecedented number of about 440 (190 in MTB, 80 in TrailRun and 170 in Experience). All of them will be able to enjoy a route that returns to its origins and that will present more stretches of coast than ever, including some coastal paths that have never been traveled in a race before.
The date of the event is also new, in the month of November, after having carried it out in September and then in March: “These dates are important for the island, because they put Menorca on the map when the season has passed and It shows that it is a fantastic time for our activities, ” asserts the race director.
Finally, Joan Febrer conceded that “the weather will mark this edition”, although he has sent a message of tranquility for athletes: “The strong tramontana is a common phenomenon in Menorca and we are used to it. It increases the risks, especially when combined with water. We are constantly monitoring the situation and will go to plan B when necessary. We want to ask the participants to use good sense, as teams and kn owing when to withdraw. We will put more resources to evacuate and recover the participants who decide to withdraw. Passing the north of the island with a strong north wind is a spectacle with all the elements unleashed; it is an unforgettable experience. ”
A sustainable initiative
Once again, Joan Febrer did not want to miss the opportunity to explain how the Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º contributes to the sustainability of the terrain through which it passes: “For us it is very important that our activity is as sustainable as possible and therefore, that is why we started in 2017 a conservation project of the Camí de Cavalls through which we collect funds from the donations of the participants and we contribute a fixed portion of two euros per participant that is invested in the conservation of the path. “
The Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º is a race that has the support and sponsorship of the Fundació Foment del Turisme de Menorca (FFTM) and the Tourism Strategy Agency of the Balearic Islands (AETIB).
