Camí de Cavalls 360º by MTB 6 stages #03: Ferreries – Ciutadella

This section consists of three distinct parts. The first one follows historic paths until reconnecting with the Camí de Cavalls at El Pilar; the second one offers easy and comfortable cycling through forests and farmland from El Pilar to Ses Fontanelles. From here, the Camí de Cavalls enters the limestone platform of northwest Menorca, an area of huge technical difficulty. The Standard and Basic routes avoid this section and head to Ciutadella mostly by road.

Camí de Cavalls 360º offers a mountain bike route around Menorca inspired by the Camí de Cavalls and adapted to maximize enjoyment on two wheels. It is an exhilarating route with short but intense uphills and downhills. The rugged terrain of the Menorcan coast gives it great appeal and high difficulty. Hardness and fun are guaranteed.

The route has three options (Standard, Plus, Basic) to suit the participants’ level. It can also be divided into three to six stages, depending on the pace and availability of time. The MTB 6 stages option is a favorite that suits a wider range of cyclists. However, it requires a physical and technical base that allows participants to tackle a much tougher and more demanding route than its total figures of over 190 kilometers and almost 2,500 meters of elevation suggest.

With Camí de Cavalls 360º, participants only have to think about biking and enjoying the landscapes and scenery. The organization team takes care of the rest: advice on the route and its variants, logistical issues, and even transfers to accommodations when necessary.

The third stage of the route starts in Ferreries for the Standard and Basic routes, which rejoin the Camí de Cavalls at El Pilar. Here, they merge with the Plus route and share a common section, before separating again when the difficulties increase once more. The final part between Cala Morell and Ciutadella is completely different for the Plus route.

From Ferreries to El Pilar

Participants who chose the Standard and Basic routes begin this stage in Ferreries on road. Along historic inland paths of Menorca, such as the Camí d’en Kane, the Camí des Alocs, the Camí Reial del Nord, and the Camí del Pilar, they alternate between paved and natural sections, with a mix of rolling terrain and more technical, steeper segments.

Both routes rejoin the Plus route at El Pilar, one of the most beautiful and character-filled coves in Menorca.

From El Pilar to Cala Morell

This nearly 13-kilometer section fully follows the Camí de Cavalls. It begins with a technical descent (of low difficulty) of almost one kilometer down to Pla de Mar, a beach of large pebbles at the base of the Muntanya Mala mountain.

In the next eight kilometers, until the cove of Ses Fontanelles, the landscape changes completely. It moves away from the coast and winds through a wooded and agricultural area, a delight for bikers. Compared to other sections of the Camí de Cavalls, this is a comfortable and easy section, passing near Cala d’Algaiarens (also known as La Vall).

After crossing the Pinar de Son Àngel area on a sandy path, the route descends to Ses Fontanelles. Here begins a technical climb that feels longer than its 350 meters, as there are parts where you’ll definitely have to push your bike on foot. The descent is also technical but much more manageable.

The Codolar de Biniatram area offers great views of the Corniola, Cap Gros, Cala en Carbó, and Punta Roja cliffs. Only two kilometers remain until Cala Morell, but they are very rocky. This is the start of the limestone platform in the northwest and south of Menorca. The Camí de Cavalls enters a long section with little elevation change but a lot of rocks, making it very demanding technically.

From Cala Morell to Ciutadella

The section between the Codolar de Biniatram and Cala Morell is just a warning of how tough the next 13 kilometers of the Camí de Cavalls can be, passing through Punta Nati, Morro de sa Falconera, and Pont d’en Gil, among other spots. This section is only suitable for highly experienced mountain bikers with excellent technical skills, seeking a challenge like few others—this part of the Plus route will not disappoint them.

The Basic and Standard routes, meanwhile, avoid the difficulties from Algaiarens and Cala Morell, respectively. On the way to Ciutadella, they primarily follow road sections, with some detours on wide dirt tracks.
